'There were doubts' - Ferdinand admits Man Utd team-mates didn't have faith in De Gea

Image
The goalkeeper starred against Sevilla on Wednesday but one former team-mate had initial doubts regarding the goalkeeper Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand revealed he and his team-mates doubted whether David de Gea would go on to become a world-class goalkeeper following his arrival in 2011. De Gea  produced a wonderful performance to earn United a goalless draw at Sevilla  in the opening leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, pawing away Luis Muriel's point-blank header in a moment of brilliance on Wednesday. It further strengthened De Gea's case as the best goalkeeper in the world amid constant speculation of a possible move to Real Madrid, however, it has not been all smooth sailing for the Spain international at Old Trafford. De Gea initially struggled with the physicality of the Premier League after being lured from boyhood club Atletico Madrid as a baby-faced Spaniard seven years ago. How Arsenal beat Olympiakos & Udinese to the signing of Konstantinos Mavropanos

Image
The Greek scout who first spotted the defender talks about the 20-year-old's past, present and very bright future While Arsenal’s January transfer window will be remembered by the wider football world for the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the arrival of a 20-year-old Greek defender in north London sent shockwaves through his homeland. Konstantinos Mavropanos had only made two appearances for Greek Super League side PAS Giannina going into the 2017-18 season but his impressive performances saw the likes of Olympiakos and Udinese scramble over his signature, before Arsenal’s new head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, rang the player’s agent to seal a deal in late December. Mislintat may have made the final, decisive move but the man who first identified Mavropanos as a potential star was Vasilis Stachtiaris.

Zidane stands by selfless Benzema during testing spell at Real Madrid

The French striker once again drew a blank in a 3-1 win at Leganes, but his manager has pointed towards the under-fire forward's all-round play Zinedine Zidane has again voiced his support for much-maligned Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. Benzema was unable to add to his paltry return of three La Liga goals this season as Madrid beat Leganes 3-1 on Wednesday to edge up to third in the table. The Frenchman was involved in the build-up to goals from Lucas Vazquez and Casemiro before half-time and selflessly led the line as Leganes put their illustrious opponents under sustained pressure after the break. Zidane has been a consistent champion of Benzema during a difficult campaign and talked up these qualities afterwards. "No, I'm not worried," he replied when asked about his countryman's goalscoring return on beIN Sports. "It is the situation we have now. We would like him to score. "The other day against Betis he scored. Here he cou...

'Man United are a big team in defeat' - Mourinho takes aim at City after Wigan brawl

Image
The Frenchman had an early introduction in Seville but it made no difference as United turned in a forgettable performance Before Manchester United even stepped onto the pitch at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, there was a barrel-load of intrigue thanks to Jose Mourinho’s decision to omit Paul Pogba from the starting line-up. But even an unexpectedly early introduction for the French midfielder couldn’t inspire United  to victory over Sevilla, with the 0-0 result flattering them. They had six shots to the home side's 25. On any other night against any other Champions League team, you get the feeling this kind of display would have seen them well beaten. The first twist in the tale came just 16 minutes in as Ander Herrera went to ground under a challenge and immediately threw his right boot to the floor in clear frustration at an injury which signalled an early end to his evening. Pogba was off the bench and stripped for action almost before Herrera’s bo...
